4 Ways To Save Money When Your Relocate

Posted on: 22 March 2017

If you are in the process of relocating to a new city for a job, here are four ways that you can save money on the process.

#1 Start Gathering Moving Supplies

The first thing you need to do is start gathering up moving supplies. Start stockpiling your newspapers to use as packing material. Keep all plastic bags that you get from the store; they are great for stuffing around items to keep them secure inside of your moving boxes. See if you have a few friends or family members who would be willing to save their newspapers and plastic bags for you.

Second, start gathering up boxes. See if you can pick up boxes from any local stores around you. Then see if your work is willing to save up cardboard boxes for your move.

#2 Go Through All Of Your Belongings

Assign each room or area of your house a day of the week to go through. Depending on the size of your house and how many belongings you have, this could take a few days or it could take a couple of weeks. As you go through each room, determine which items you could donate or sell, which items you should throw out, and what items you really want to take with you. Then, make a plan to get rid of these items. You can donate them to organizations if you are looking for a tax write-off, or you can make some money on the items by selling them through sites like craigslist and eBay, holding a yard sale, or taking the items to a consignment shop.

If you effectively go through each room of your home, this should reduce the amount of items you have to move and the number of packing supplies you need. You could also earn some cash or reduce your taxes, depending on how you choose to get rid of the items.

#3 Pack Up Your House

Third, you can save yourself a lot of money by packing up your house on your own. As you go through each room, you can start to pack up everything that is not essential. You can leave behind labeled boxes in each room for the essential items that you plan on packing last. This will allow you to ensure that everything is packed and labeled correctly.

#4 Use A Relocation Service

Finally, while you focus on going through things and packing up your house, let someone else get your new home together. It can take a lot and time and effort to find a new home to rent or buy. If you are not able to take extra time off work in order to find a new place to live, using a relocation service can save you money by saving you time. Plus, your company may cover the cost of using a relocation service. If they don't, you can write it off on your taxes next year. Sometimes, you have to spend a little money to save some money. They can help you get a good deal on a new place to live.
