Move It, Slow Poke! Four Tips To Expedite Your Moving Process

Posted on: 14 April 2017

Moving is a big task, and it's one that can stretch on and on for months if you don't take measures to expedite the process. If you really want to just move and get on with your life, follow these tips to get out of your home and into a new one in a time-efficient manner.

Schedule your moving-related tasks.

About a month before your move, sit down with a calendar in front of you. Make a list of all of the moving-related tasks you need to complete. These tasks could be anything from "wrap up glasses" to "call moving companies." Then, assign each of these tasks to a day in the week prior to your move. Having a written plan in front of you will save you time, since you won't be jumping from task to task and trying to figure out what to do next.

Be careful who you ask to help.

You might assume that the more helpers you have, the faster you'll finish packing and moving. But this is only true to a certain extent. If you have too many helpers, they'll just start tripping over each other. Unless you have a huge house or several trucks' worth of items, having four or five helpers show up should be sufficient. Assign everyone a task or responsibility so they all know what their roles are and don't waste time standing around.

Don't disassemble and over-pack items that don't need it.

Do you really need to take things out of your dresser drawers? Probably not -- you can save time by just leaving things in there and taping the drawers shut. Similarly, it's perfectly fine to leave bookshelves and tables in one piece rather than taking them apart. You might need to rent a larger moving truck since these items take up more space when fully assembled, but these few extra dollars will be well worth the time you save.

Throw away and donate items as you go.

Instead of going through your items to find things you want to donate or throw away -- and then packing a few weeks later -- do this all in one step. Place two big bins next to you as you pack things into boxes to move. As you come across items you don't need, toss them into the "throw away" tote or the "donate" tote.

If you're really on a tight schedule, hiring a professional moving company can save you time and energy!
